The more interesting question arrives afterwards. What do you actually do with the extra space?

According to Apple’s product page, iPhone Duo combines a roughly 7.6-inch inner display with a 5.4-inch outer display. The appeal is understandable: keep the small screen for quick tasks and open the larger one when a map, document or second app earns the space.

Two apps should solve one problem

Apple describes Split View multitasking and an interface that adapts as the device folds and changes orientation. The examples that interest me are mundane: keeping a booking confirmation beside a map, checking notes while writing a message, or comparing two things without repeatedly switching apps.

That is a better test than fitting the largest possible number of windows on a phone. A larger screen should remove a little friction from an existing task. If it mainly encourages more fiddling, the hinge has solved the wrong problem.

The camera has a second audience

The official feature list includes Duo Preview, which lets the person being photographed see a preview on the outer display, and Smart Take for joining a group photograph without racing a timer. Those are sensible uses of a display that would otherwise be facing away from its owner.

It is an interesting change in emphasis. The phone becomes a little more useful to the people around the photographer, rather than adding another setting for the photographer to manage.

Read the regional details

Apple opened pre-orders on 16 October. Its announcement also makes clear that Siri AI availability has regional and language limits, including no initial availability in the EU on iOS. For a Dutch buyer, a feature shown in a US demonstration is not automatically a feature available on day one.

This is an overview of Apple’s published information, not a device I have tested. Hinge feel, comfortable one-handed use, app behaviour and battery life in ordinary use remain the questions to answer in person. The larger display is the invitation; everyday usefulness has to make the case.

Official product image: Apple Newsroom.
