There is a point at which planning a festival becomes a second job. Another timetable, another group chat, another impossible journey between two sets that start at the same time. Amsterdam Dance Event is an excellent excuse to resist that temptation.
ADE 2026 runs from 21 to 25 October, marking thirty years of the event. The organisers describe a completed festival programme spanning more than 3,600 artists, 1,300 events and 300 venues. That is a city full of possibilities, rather than a checklist anyone could sensibly finish.
Choose a night, not just a name
The official programme includes names such as KI/KI, Job Jobse, SHERELLE, Amelie Lens and Armand Van Helden. Familiar artists provide a useful starting point, but the room, running order and people around them deserve equal attention.
A favourite DJ squeezed between two rushed transfers can become a less memorable experience than an unfamiliar artist given an uninterrupted hour. Pick one event you really want to attend, then build the evening around staying there long enough to hear its character.
Keep something for daylight
ADE also has conference and arts-and-culture programmes. A conversation, an installation or a quiet stop between events can give the week a different rhythm. Electronic music is interesting well beyond the moment a kick drum arrives.
Leave an unbooked afternoon. Have a proper meal. Look through a record shop. A little space makes it easier to notice something you would never have searched for by name.
The practical bit
Festival tickets are sold by the individual organisers. A Pro Pass has its own benefits and capacity conditions; it is not a promise of admission to every crowded room. Check the official event listing and ticket terms before committing to a plan.
My preferred approach is simple: a short list of essentials, comfortable shoes and permission to change direction. The best souvenir from five days of music might be one artist you had never heard of on Wednesday.
